Dress For Success And Your New Job

I know we all heard the old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but dressing the part can go a long way.  You want to make a good impression don’t you?  You wish to be respected at your new or existing job?  Then make that extra effort.  Come on now, how hard can it be?

You don’t need to run out and rob a bank.  Look for great bargains.  They’re almost everywhere, especially at this time of the year.  Find the best sales in your local shopping flyers and go online as well to find discount coupons.  Sometimes by registering with a store or mall website, you can receive extra bonus discounts.  You can also get great savings coupons from www.save.ca  and www.coupons.com.  Do a search on www.Google.com as well and use keywords like shopping bargains, sales online, online shopping, and so on.

Now don’t over do the dressing either.  You want to look professional and well-dressed, but remember that you also want to fit in with this new job.  Make sure your shoes are polished or at least clean.  Your hair too should be neat.  No need to have a swanky stylish hairdo, but have it at least placed and not looking like you just rolled out of bed, or like a fan just blew through it. 

If you want to be a manager, dress classy like a manager.  Dressing up in a classy way can convey authority and confidence, and can also go a long way for a promotion or even a search for new higher paying jobs.  Don’t try to make a loud statement with your clothes.  Go for a more conservative business look, and always appear to be clean and ready to work.

Make sure you cover up and hide your tattoos unless you’re planning to work at a tattoo parlor.  A new employer may not share your taste in body art.

Go easy on the perfume or after-shave, or better yet, don’t wear any at all.  Many offices now have a scent-free environment.  Several people have allergies to perfume.  Just have that extra clean look and smell.  Be sure to take a shower, and yes, don’t forget to brush your teeth.

If you’re a woman, try not to wear too much makeup.  Always have your nails clean and well manicured.  A little goes a long way!  No shirt skirts or dresses either, or see-through tops.  And please be sure to cut off any stickers or tags that are sticking out or hanging on your new clothes.

For you guys, like I mentioned earlier, easy on the aftershave and cologne, and please no faded pants or belly sticking out of your slacks.  Long sleeves are always more professional than short.  And try to always wear a belt.  Put away your sneakers, and maybe take out your dress shoes. 

Your attire will say something specific about you, so make sure that it’s well thought out.  Always look presentable and professional.  When you’re not sure about what to wear, stay away from something bright and flashy. 

If you want your employer to take you seriously, then pay attention to details, and look your very best.  You don’t need to look like a model, but you do need to look like someone that they could trust.

Fresh smelling breath is also very crucial.  Never mind about taking that one last cigarette before you go out the door.  Your clothes will wreak the smell of smoke.  It certainly won’t do much for your breath either.

As far as jewelry goes, girls keep the big fashion earrings for at home and your night out.  And guys, just a watch is best.  Forget the new piercings that you may want to show off.

Just think, would you want someone to work for you who looks clean and business-like, or downright dirty?

The 30 Second Rule of Interviewing!

When you are searching for a job, the #1 thing on your mind is getting that interview. You have probably taken several steps to roducing your resume, coverletter, and online applications, to make sure you make the rankings. But when you are creating these document, and visiting the online applications, you have to keep a summary of all that you have accomplished. There is 1 min question that an interviewer ask you. That question is, "Tell me a little about yourself." This is not a behavioral question that we are seeing these days in interviewing. This question has been around since the beginning of time! So what do most people do when telling someone about themselves in an interview setting? They commence to telling them a story, sugar coating most of the results, and eventually ending on some high note. Well, ending on a high note, or some fluffed description of who you are, can sometimes leave a sour taste in the interviewers mind. Some individuals commence to telling them about their characteristics, their moods, which are not even relevant to the question, especially in interview settings.

When seeking employment, when an employer ask you to tell them about you. You want to include where you are originally from, the college or university or school you have attended and with what degree you have attained. You then begin sharing your work experience. And one final thing that you normally include in your resume at the very top. You should share an objective at the closing of telling them about yourself. By doing this, it will show interviewers that you are optimistic, you have goals, you have some direction in your mind careerwise. Although this seems as though you are repeating your resume all over again, you want to condense it without going into great details of the job descriptions you’ve held. Touch lightly on everything as if it were a verbal outline.

So say, this is your resume below.

The tip is to say all you can within 30 seconds or less. Doing this will keep the interviewer from getting annoyed by your ranting on about yourself. It is just like creating a commercial with the very same details, or an elevator introduction which I will discuss in another article. Think about how much companies can get into 30 seconds or less about a product that will grab your attention instantly. This is what you want to do for employers when you are selling yourself.

Here’s a sample 30 second statement:

" My name is Savannah Gorman. I’m originally from State City, State. I attended My University, in St. Louis, Missouri. i work for A Technical University Online as an Adjunct Instructor, where i am responsible for providing my students with the basics of business strategy and professional communication, as well as constructive criticism on submitted assignments. Angel Investor Mind Control: Is This Process Real?

Discovering the ‘thumbscrews’ of investors is crucial to getting them to take action. In over a decade of dealing with global investors there are several elements that I’ve discovered to be universal truths about the mind of the private investor (angel investor, accredited investor).

When talking to an investor for the first time, it’s more important to listen than to speak. It’s more important to ask questions than answer them. It’s more important to discover their needs and wants than to exclaim your own. Your first conversation with an investor should be all about piercing the armor and finding the trigger points that prompt a reaction that gets to the center of their ‘childlike’ state.

What I mean by this is, investors, just like anyone else, has insecurities that are rooted in their childhood and what they are outwardly today, is typically a polar opposite of what they are on the inside. For example, an arrogant, chest beater seems proud and obnoxious on the outside but the reality is that they are over compensating for an insecurity that is rooted in an individual or collection of childhood incidents.

Maybe they were made fun of as a child, maybe they’re father was verbally abusive, maybe their teachers would single them out in class opening them up to playground mockery. When talking to these individuals it’s important to listen to their voice and intonation when the conversation topic changes. Take notes on their psychological adjustments to the conversation. After you feel you have discovered the triggers that induce the ‘pleasurable’ responses, end the call, and set your second phone appointment with them.

On that second call, you want to have your conversation ready to go using the triggers you found in the first conversation. Play off of those insecurities that you found, become their best friend without being chummy but it is your mission on this call to be the “guy that understand me” to the investor. You want the overall tone of this conversation to have the response from your target along the theme of, “wow, this guy gets me” , “I can see investing in this company”.

By using this method and not coming across as ‘fake’, you have become an investment opportunity and a shrink all rolled into one. You want to be the one person that this investor can lower his guard to because everything he says, you seem to be the one person who understands him at his deepest level. You seem to naturally be tuned into his insecurities, emotions, needs and wants. Sound strange? Try this out on the next investor you talk to, I guaranty you will be shocked with the results.

How to Plan for the Scramble

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP®) Scramble is an oftentimes confusing process that tends to generate a lot of questions. The Scramble is a system used to fill unfilled residency positions. Some medical residency programs will have available residency slots even after the NRMP has completed the Match; these positions become available during the Scramble period so that those applicants who did not get a residency position can vie for them. Please see my article entitled, “What is the Scramble” for a complete calendar of the Scramble 2010

Here’s a step-by-step plan for the Scramble:

  1. In the weeks before, consider reworking your personal statement for a second field if you think you might Scramble into a second specialty. For example, if you are applying in Emergency Medicine and think you may not match, it might be worth reworking your personal statement for Family Medicine, if you would be happy in that field as well, as Family Medicine is less competitive. (Of course the problem with scrambling into another field is that your application as a whole will be focused toward the first specialty; however, it still might be worth a try, especially for a less competitive field.) You can upload the new personal statement to My ERAS before the Scramble without assigning it to a residency program.

  2. On Monday, March 15, 2010 applicant matched and unmatched information is posted to the NRMP web site at 12:00 noon EST. If you find out then that you have not matched, plan to take the next day off.

  3. Create a PDF file of your entire application for emailing and also have copies available for faxing.

  4. Because, unfortunately, the Scramble occurs through two means – the official one, which is ERAS – and the informal one, which is faxing and phone calls to programs – it helps to organize a few friends and some supplies, including a phone line, a fax line and a computer, for March 16, 2010.

  5. On Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at noon the NRMP’s Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs is released. This list includes all of the residencies that have unfilled slots. Thus, after looking at the list, you select the programs to which you want to apply through ERAS. Remember an applicant may apply to a maximum of thirty new programs in addition to fifteen “old” programs (residencies to which s/he applied during the regular ERAS season). There is no charge for applying to programs during the Scramble.

  6. Soon after selecting the programs to which you want to apply through ERAS, you begin calling your top choices, while trying to send out your PDF to those programs. This is the chaotic part of the Scramble. Knowing someone at a program can make a difference.

  7. Hopefully, at the point you will connect with someone at a residency program who will offer you a phone interview. With luck, you will be offered a spot.

The Scramble system currently is rather turbulent. The best plan for the Scramble, of course, is to avoid it altogether. To improve your residency candidacy fully and thus improve your chances of matching, consider working with a professional. Because applicants can unknowingly undermine their chances of success with poorly compiled application materials and underdeveloped residency personal statements, a qualified, personalized residency admissions consultant provides a great advantage.

How to answer those common but tough interview questions

We all are aware through experience that there are a certain set of interview questions that pop up every time you go for an interview. And, regardless of how well-prepared you are you are sure to find them highly boring. But there is really no need of breaking into a sweat each time you are faced with such queries. A bit of common sense and smartness in your communication style can help you to sail through even the toughest of the interviews. Here I’ll discuss a few such questions

 

Tell me something about yourself.” This often makes us dumbstruck. We spend precious few minutes on figuring what to answer and what we end up stammering is more often than not unimpressive. Most people actually goof up trying to sum up his/her entire life in a couple of minutes. This question actually tests your focus. Just count on your years of experience in your respective field and brief the interviewer on what you have achieved so far. If you are a fresher, talk about your achievements in school and college and your professional courses. Talk about your role on relevant assignments and projects and how you went about with them. Remember, the employer wants to know your execution style with projects, problems and assignments.  

“Why do you want to leave your current job?” This is perhaps the most difficult question. There can be a number of reasons like you might have resigned, had been laid off of even fired. You need to explain your position truthfully and also not end up sounding as a hopeless individual or victim of circumstances. It is your positive attitude that the employer is looking for through this question. Present yourself as a proactive employee who is ready to take up responsibilities and challenges. Do not bring up your past frustrations in your present interview. Stop carrying unnecessary baggage. If you were fired be truthful and explain it quickly without delving into political details of your past office environment. If you were laid off, do not show defeat in your attitude. It is no longer a taboo given the current situation. If you’ve quit your job, express yourself truthfully.  

“What are your career goals or where do you see yourself 5/10 years from now”? Do not brag or start painting castles in the air. The employer wants to judge how responsible you are through this question. Be realistic and avoid mentioning designation unless it absolutely calls for. If you have planned your career wisely, you’ll have no problem n answering this question.
